Most of you will have noticed that there are NO governors placed on the type and variety of language you may use on this site.

There is a reason for this: we are adults - and any language which was fit for purpose by Chaucer and Shakespeare is, frankly, good enough for us; regardless of how rum it might appear to lesser, more fearful & neophyte-puritanical minds on other boards.

What is 'The Scunthorpe Conundrum', and how does it ruin websites?

The Scunthorpe Conundrum is where a word [perceived by some to be offensive] appears within the confines of a larger word - e.g. Scunthorpe. Many websites have a function/feature which automatically searches for any combination of letters which make up these perceived-to-be-offensive words and replaces some or all of the letters in it with asterisks - in our example, Scunthorpe would thus be rendered Sc***horpe.

As you can see, this is patently bizarre and unacceptable amongst sentient human beings over Kindergarten age; so the automatic word censor function on this board has not been activated. That is not a charter to pepper your every post with Anglo-Saxon expletives, but you are largely free to use them where you think they may add emphasis or comedic value to your piece. Like all things, if you don't wish to be treated like a child, act like an adult.

To further illustrate the point as to why we don't use the word censor function, please see this piece below on how its use makes a mockery of perfectly innocent words:

iTunes glitch censors song titles

Some examples:

"I thought I Saw a P***y Cat - Danny Kaye" - iTunes' automatic profanity censor goes into overdrive

Among the words that were rather inexplicably asterisked by the online music store were "hot", which became "h*t" in (Red Hot Chilli Peppers); "killer" which became "k****r" (Killer Queen); and "Johnny" which became J****y for Johnny Cash.

I thought this piece of literary slang sums up the practice which some boards employ to replace letters with asterisks quite wonderful:

Disemvowel (v) - removing vowels from unwanted text in Internet forums and on-line communities to censor unwanted words, meanings and postings.
